Concert Series “The Sea Organ” 2024

Santa Maria del Mar is a unique site with an exceptional heritage, both architecturally and musically. The organ of Santa Maria del Mar has a long history: it was built around 1740 for the Trinitarian convent in Vic. Following its dismantling near the time of the Civil War and a period of neglect, it was rediscovered and restored by organ builder Gerhard Grenzing, and installed in the Basilica, which had been left without its grand organ after the fire of 1936. The current organ is undoubtedly a museum-worthy instrument, but merely observing it behind glass serves little purpose. With the “Organ of the Sea” series, we will hear this singular instrument—full of history and stories—in an incomparable setting, under the hands of highly esteemed organists.

Tuesday, January 9, 8:15 p.m.:
Juan de la Rubia
Titular organist of the Sagrada Família and professor of improvisation at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, Juan de la Rubia is one of the most prominent figures in the organ world. He will present a concert in which improvisation will explore all the resources of the historic 18th-century organ of Santa Maria del Mar.

Tuesday, January 16, 8:15 p.m.:
Enrique Martín Laguna
Enrique Martín Laguna is one of Spain’s emerging organists, awarded at the Concurso Nacional de Órgano de Burgos. He is also an organ professor in Burgos and the titular organist of the Cathedral of Getafe.

Tuesday, January 23, 8:15 p.m.:
Joan Seguí Mercadal – Mantra
The titular organist of Santa Maria del Mar will offer a concert tailored to the space. Symmetry, pattern, repetition, structure—these are elements of architecture that also appear in musical repertoire, from the Baroque to the twentieth century. Minimalism, improvisation, and early music will enter into dialogue with the stones of Santa Maria.
