The concert features the Requiem in D minor, K. 626 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The JOFICAT was founded by the Barcelona-born conductor Melani Mestre with the aim of creating a permanent orchestral academy in Catalonia. Its mission is not only to consolidate young musicians’ training and knowledge of the orchestral repertoire but also to foster both individual and collective excellence among its members at a professional level.
The Coral Càrmina was founded in 1972 by Jordi Casas i Bayer. Over the past five decades it has become one of the leading choirs in the Catalan choral scene. Throughout its history it has been conducted by musicians such as Josep Pons, Francesc Guillén, Josep Vila i Casañas, Alfred Cañamero, Montserrat Ríos, Fernando Marina, and Gorka Sierra.
The choir has also collaborated with internationally renowned conductors such as Edmon Colomer, László Heltay, Christopher Hogwood, Antoni Ros Marbà, Salvador Mas, Andrew Parrott, and Ton Koopman, among many others.
Its repertoire ranges from medieval polyphony to contemporary compositions. The choir has always shown particular interest in contemporary Catalan composers, as demonstrated by its participation in the premieres of works by Frederic Mompou, Francesc Homs, Manuel Valls, Joan Guinjoan, Josep Soler i Sardà, and Xavier Benguerel i Godó.
Notable premieres include La arboleda by Salvador Brotons, Essències by the Mallorcan composer Damià León, El Mirador by Josep Vila, and Les Homilies V i VI by Albert Carbonell, premiered in 2013 at the L’Auditori de Barcelona.
The choir has performed in several European countries. Among its most notable appearances are its participation in the inaugurations of the concert halls of Barcelona and Madrid, as well as in the opening ceremony of the 1992 Summer Olympics.
