Montserrat Torrent, the distinguished pianist whose roots are in Barcelona, will perform on Thursday, July 27 (at 8 p.m.) at the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar in what will be the inaugural concert of the 43rd edition of the cycle The Organs of Catalonia. At 97 years of age, Torrent will present a varied programme, beginning with works by Antonio de Cabezón, Antonio Carreira, and Correa de Arauxo, and continuing with compositions by Sweelinck, Pablo Bruna, Scarlatti, and Joan Baptista Cabanilles.
For more than 40 years, the Catalan Organ Association has organized the cycle The Organs of Catalonia, a series of summer concerts that showcase the historic organs located throughout Catalonia, featuring numerous renowned organists.
Today, the cycle is made possible thanks to the collaboration of local institutions, town councils, and parishes, all of which contribute to preserving and sharing the rich organ heritage of Catalonia. The initiative is also supported financially by the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies (ICEC) of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia.
