The stones of the Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar, with their monumentality and long history, have witnessed the talent of numerous Kapellmeisters (Masters of the Chapel) over the centuries. In this space—rich in meaning and musical tradition—The Ministers of Pastime invite us to explore the stylus phantasticus through the works of Giovanni Valentini, Antonio Bertali and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, all of whom served as Kapellmeisters at the Viennese court. These composers, renowned for their innovation, virtuosity and mastery, were central figures in a musical movement that was virtually without stylistic limitations.
This programme not only traces the history of the stylus phantasticus through the instrumental works of these three composers, but also allows us to appreciate how, thanks to their close relationship with emperors and patrons, these musicians enjoyed a creative freedom that enabled them to refine a compositional style rooted in experimentation and imagination, creating a language rich in expressive affects, unique harmonic landscapes and striking sonic contrasts.
The Ministers of Pastime, recognised for their dedication to historically informed performance of 17th- and 18th-century music, promise an evening in which historical precision and a passion for early music come together in an incomparable setting.
