Roberto Fresco is one of the most distinguished organ professors on the national scene. His work at the Centro Superior Katarina Gurska in Madrid has trained numerous notable organists. He also serves as titular organist of the Catedral de la Almudena.
For each concert in the series, Montserrat Torrent has selected a tiento from the Facultad Orgánica by Francisco Correa de Arauxo, a publication celebrating its 400th anniversary this year.
Approximate duration of the concerts: 55 minutes.
Santa Maria del Mar is a unique site with an exceptional heritage, both architecturally and musically. The organ of Santa Maria del Mar has a long history: it was built around 1740 for the Trinitarian convent in Vic. After being dismantled around the time of the Spanish Civil War and subsequently falling into oblivion, it was rediscovered and restored by the organ builder Gerhard Grenzing and installed in the Basilica, which had been left without its great organ following the fire. In addition to the present instrument, several other organs are known to have occupied spaces within Santa Maria del Mar, and even some that were planned but never installed.
This year, the series features internationally renowned organists, both young and established. The cycle also joins in the celebrations of the centenary of Montserrat Torrent, a leading figure of the organ in Europe and the musician who inaugurated the instrument of Santa Maria del Mar.
